FAQ: Babylock and Brother Embroidery Formats

Q: Is the Brother PES format the same as Babylock PES?

Answer: Yes. Brother and Babylock machines use the same .PES embroidery file format. The file structure is identical, so a PES design created for Brother machines will also work on Babylock machines — provided the design size fits your hoop.

Q: I cannot download my design in PES format. My machine (Brother Innov-is 4000D) is not listed. What should I do?

Answer: In our store, the model is listed as Brother 4000. This is the same machine series as the Brother Innov-is 4000D. You can safely select Brother 4000 when downloading your PES file.

Q: I purchased PES designs, but they do not work on my Brother machine. I thought all PES files were compatible. Why is this happening?

Answer: All PES files use the same digital format, but embroidery compatibility also depends on hoop size limitations.

For example:

  • The Brother SE400 supports only a 4" × 4" hoop.
  • If you download a design sized 5" × 5", it will not load or stitch on that machine.
  • The same PES design will work on larger machines such as the Brother Innov-is 1800, which supports bigger hoops.

The issue is not the file format — it is the design dimensions compared to your machine’s maximum embroidery area.

Important Tip

Always check your machine’s maximum hoop size before purchasing or downloading a design. If needed, choose a smaller size version of the design that fits your hoop.
